What is Tulsi?

The story behind Tulsi not being offered to Shri Ganesh:
It is strange to know that why Tulsi is not offered to Lord Ganesha? There is a puranic theory behind it. Tulsi was a girl she was a pure devotee of Lord Mahavishnu. She was very dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu. Once she came across Lord Ganesha, he was meditating in a beautiful garden surrounded by good smelling trees. Ganesha was moved by her appearance. As she was wearing a yellow garment and sandal paste was spread all over her body. Tulsi was also highly moved by Ganesha’s pleasing look. Therefore, she requested him to marry her.
Lord Ganesha said he was, in fact, leading the life of a Brahmacharya. So he cannot think of marriage. Since it would hinder the purpose of his life. Tulsi was annoyed listening to this statement.
The curse or Shrap:
Therefore in great disappointment with Lord Ganesha. She cursed him stating that he will have a forceful marriage that too against his will. Though Ganesha is amongst the highly humble and generous Gods. But the rude behavior of the girl Tulsi made him angry.
Therefore, in turn, Ganesha cursed her! Stating that she will face a big misfortune. And shall have to marry a demon and suffer under him. Tulsi then realized her mistake. Then she prayed Lord Ganesha to save her from the deadly curse. Lord Ganesha, being soft and humble was pleased. And he pardoned her. So he said as per the curse she shall marry a demon. But after one life, she shall become a plant, provided in her next birth. Also, she was blessed with exceptional medicinal properties plus she shall become very close to Lord Mahavishnu. Therefore, Mahavishnu shall be highly pleased with her. So Tulsi offering is made to him, and this way she shall enjoy an exalted position.
Both the curse and the blessing of given by Lord Ganesha came true! First Tulsi got married to a demon named Shankachuda. She spent one whole life with him. And then took birth as Tulsi plant in her following birth. As per Ganesha’s assurance, she was taken as a wonderful plant. Much suitable for the worship of Lord Mahavishnu. No pooja for Mahavishnu shall be complete without an offering Tulsi.
